Are you an Urban Romantic

Music nowadays has drifted out of the homes of so many, some can't stand what is produced, however others love to dance and party all night long to it. One might say, what happened to the music that I use to listen to, can we get back to those days. The history of music has not left us, it reigns in the lives of many young people and artist for that matter. Take Amber Mimz for example, she a native Washingtonian who thrives off the sounds of great artist like Minnie Rippleton and Marvin Gaye. I got a chance to catch up with this fashionable artistic soul, to talk about her life in music and what an "Urban Romantic" really is. Read on to capture parts of her soul as she shares her story of being a "Urban Romantic".

SF: Tell me a little bit about yourself?
AM: I am from Washington D.C. I am a singer/songwriter/producer/teacher/
student to the game. I Love Salmon cakes, I am a musician, and an urban romantic.

SF: How did music enter your life?

AM: At a very young age, my father was an artist, my mother ran his business. I listened to a variety of music from Tina Marie to Fela Kuti, I took art classes, Artist as working professionals is what I grew up around. I attended Duke Ellington (during the summer before I went to High school) and I did music through the program. I’ve been doing music for a very long time. I don’t know what I would be doing if I wasn’t doing music.

SF: How would you describe your artistry? (Neo soul, r&b, etc)
AM: It’s a Gumbo, it’s not just r&b or neo soul, it’s Urban Electronic Soul (a different
type of music).

SF: Who are your musical influences?
AM: Minnie Rippleton, Prince, Erykah Badu, Herbbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald, and
Marvin Gaye... There's way more but you get the jest

SF: Do you have any other inspirations that inspire you artistically?

AM: I enjoy dressing; you put on a whole other face by changing your hair or
clothing. I love Marc Jacobs, Irregular Choice (London, New York) shoes for women. Visual Artists Romare Bearden, film maker Spike Lee, my dad...of course and my brother Jamel Mims, I love how they can see stories or images visually in their head and make it come to life in a way where there's so much beauty... I admire the process as well.

SF: Explain Urban Romance Sessions?
AM: Urban Roman Sessions is an EP about the beginnings of a relationship, young
people of 2010's thoughts of romance are not the same as our parents were. We Speak through a lot of communication mediums such as twitter, facebook and texting... I believe that chivalry is not dead; we need to get back to interacting as people and believing that love can with stand a lot of things.

SF: The 2nd half of the EP is called Picture Perfect Suites? Correct?
AM: Correct. It’s a more in depth portion of the EP; it focuses more on what is this
relationship; talking about the actual process of relating, what kind of things do we take as reality or non-reality, ideals change and where your pride stands... A picture can be very surfaced but also full of depth, a lot like relationships..love even.

SF: Is Dutch Master the first single off the EP?
AM: Lol!! Dutch Master is on the mix tape, [available for free download at www.ambermimz.com] but Urban Romance Ave is the first single off the EP featuring Black Cobain (rapper) of the Board Administration.

SF: What producers did you work with on this EP?
AM: Platinum Sounds Productions, MEC Productions, and I produced 3 tracks on this project

SF: Do you write all your own music?
AM:I write all my own music, I am an Independent Artist, I'm not signed to a specific label, but having my own label is definitely in my future plans. I want to help out someone else along the way; it will be a place of support, like a family vibe (with a solid group of people). As an artist you can depend on yourself but you also need honesty... someone to tell you if this note is right, or if that lyric is corny or hot, you don’t need a "yes man."

SF: Who is your music for?

AM: My music is for everybody, my mother loves it and she’s over 45, but 16/17
year olds also enjoy it. When I say my mother loves my music it’s not to say that
because she is over 45 she can’t enjoy it. People of different ages, races and backgrounds is who my music is for. It appeals to different types of people, depending on what they are going through in their lives... although, everything is not for everybody... Maybe you'll find some qualities you like or not but I believe it to be received by a diverse crowd.

SF: When does your EP drop?
AM: It just recently dropped on July 30, 2010- EP on itunes it’s $7.00 with 7 songs.

SF: If you had the chance to pick your ideal collaborations who would you work
with?

AM: Pharell, Cee-lo, Janelle Monae, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Georgia Ann Muldrow, just name few.

SF: What would you like your fans/supporters to understand about you?
AM: Dear listeners, I love love, out of love, I produce music, I’m an optimist and
realist. I appreciate the gift that was given; I like to share them through the talent
that was shared with me. This is all of me that I’m giving, doing shows for good money or little money; I do this because I love it. This is something I take very seriously, people can relate to stories and I am a storyteller, and I strive to connect on different levels.
