Black Women in History: Hattie McDaniel

Hattie McDaniel was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1898 to a family of thirteen children which she is the youngest. Hattie's family was full of performers, her father was a baptist minister, a banjo player, carpenter and a minstrel showman. Hattie knew she could sing at a young age, she would sing at home, church and at school. She sang so much that her mother bribed her with money for her to stop. Shortly, thereafter Hattie begin to perform professionally in minstrel shows, dancing, sing and performing skits. In 1910 she left high school in her sophomore year, to go on the road to perform minstrel full time with her father's shows and other minstrel troupes.

Hattie McDaniel is best known for her portrayal of "Mammy" in the movie Gone With The Wind. That movie made her the first African American to win a Oscar Award and she also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
